What grade do I need on my final exam?
Turn a target course grade into a specific exam score.
Check what your current grade includes
Use the average for completed coursework, excluding the final. A learning platform may show a current average or an overall grade that already treats missing work as zero. Those are different inputs. Confirm the grading display and the final’s percentage weight in your syllabus.
Work through the formula
Suppose your completed-work average is 82%, the final is worth 30%, and your target is 85%. Completed work contributes 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 percentage points. The final must contribute 85 − 57.4 = 27.6. Divide by 0.30: you need 92% on the final.
Compare a few possible scores
With the same 82% current average and 30% final weight, a final score of 70% gives 78.4% overall, 80% gives 81.4%, and 90% gives 84.4%. The calculator shows these what-if results without assuming what letter grade each percentage represents.
Respect local grading rules
Schools in the US, UK, Canada and Australia use different grading structures, and policies vary within each country. A percentage calculation does not determine a letter grade, degree classification or official GPA conversion. Minimum exam marks and compulsory participation can override the simple average.
